Outdoor Digital Signage
There are plenty of challenges when implementing outdoor digital signage but despite this more and more electronic displays are being erected outside to make the most of the higher audience numbers these outdoor digital advertising displays can create. While the most obvious obstacle for carrying a industrial grade LCD display outside is protecting it from the weather, and in particular rain, the issues associated with the sunlight can be just as difficult to overcome. The issue with the sunlight and outdoor electronic signage is that direct sunlight will often make the screen unreadable. Not only can sunlight cause glare (you must know what that is like when you try and watch the TV at home during the summer months where quite often you’re forced to shut the curtain to watch the screen clearly) but even when there is absolutely no glare in bright sunlight the screen will appear dim and difficult to read. However there are methods to ensure the screen is as easy as you can when taken outside:
Ensuring you have the brightest type of screen potential will go along way to making sure the screen is readable. The minimum screen brightness for any outdoor LCD display should be 800 nits but LCD with 1000+ nits are available and should be considered when looking to get into external electronic signage. It should also be noted that in general industrial displays have higher nit values and therefore are better suited for outdoor signage screens.
Anti-glare technology Sadly, whichever way you go on that there most likely will be a few drop-off in brightness. Direct sunlight may cause more issues than just glare too. Display burn can grow if the sun is continually on it either the outdoor digital screen should be turned away from the sun another solution to protect against this screen burn should be looked at such as warming the screen itself.
Bespoke Outdoor Content
A great deal of content that works well in indoor locations doesn’t respond well to be taken outside. Use colors and designs that are more notable in outdoor locations. There is often a great deal of trial and error involved in this but check what works and what doesn’t and you should soon develop a flare for designing content that is acceptable for outdoor electronic signage.
